I need to tell you a small-sized story: During the time of the Indochina War, Robert Capa – war photographer – jumped out of his Jeep to get some pictures in a war zone. So very unfortunately, he stepped on a land mine and lost his leg. He was taken to a medical station where he died with his camera still gripped tightly in his hand. He had a lover who too was a war photographer named Gerda Taro. Taro died a while before him when a Republican tank collided into the side of a car that Taro was on. Taro is regarded by many as the first female photojournalist to die whilst covering the front lines of a war.
This song is about Capa as he stands on the landmine and lies there dying, with the image of Taro in his minds eye and how he’s going to see her again. It is FUCKING BEAUTIFUL. The instrumental sends shiver up and back down my spine. Alt J are the band of the moment. No two ways about it.
Sometime’s I struggle to understand what Joe Newman is singing. This has a whole lot to do with the fact that he is a lyrical wizard, so the stuff isn’t straight forward, it’s levels above that. Therefore, I am going to offer you the lyrics to read with the track. They’ve been beautifully done – the font – the simplicity.
It’s been a little while since a song possessed my soul so definitely. And then I think that I am going to hear this live not too far from now and my heart almost bursts with happiness.
VIVA LA EARGASM!
